Common questions.

What do I get without a subscription?
The camera itself can operate as a standalone SD-card trail cam. Images and video capture to the card, and you retrieve them physically. Everything that makes it Nightjar IQ (AI detection, real-time alerts, dashboard, custom rules, exports, integrations) runs on the platform and needs an active account. Every TrailGuard ships with Explorer access included at no cost, up to 2 cameras, so the platform is on from day one for most customers.
How does the graduated rate work when my fleet grows?
Graduated, not stepped. The first 3 cameras always price at $16, cameras 4 to 10 always price at $14, and so on. When you add cameras, only the incremental units drop into the next band. You never lose the earlier bands. Billing recalculates on the next invoice cycle.
What happens if I hit the detection allowance?
Field includes 1,500 detections per camera per month, pooled across your fleet, so a burst of activity on one camera can borrow capacity from a quiet one. If you consistently exceed the pooled allowance, additional capacity is available at $5 per 1,000 detections. We’ll flag it before you get billed for it.
How do I move from Explorer to Field?
Log in, click Upgrade, add a card. Your data, rules, cameras, and users carry over. Field features unlock immediately: Telegram, custom rules, integrations, full exports including GBIF and CamTrap DP, and 1-year retention.
What if I need to cancel?
Field is month-to-month unless you’ve prepaid annually or three-year. Cancel anytime; access continues to the end of your current billing period. Prepaid balances are not refundable but are transferable if you’re moving between programmes. Data export before cancellation is included.
Do you work with nonprofits and academic programmes?
Yes. We spun out of a 501(c)(3), and we look at partnerships case by case with nonprofits, universities, and grant-funded conservation programmes. Tell us what you’re deploying and we’ll figure out how we can support it. Best to get in touch before signup.
How does Enterprise Framework pricing work?
Enterprise is scoped, not published. It’s our platform plus a team wrapped around your programme: custom contract, dedicated CSM, professional services, compliance advisory. Camera count is a secondary indicator. The real trigger is a regulated compliance need, or a legal requirement that Field’s click-through terms won’t satisfy. Talk to sales for a quote.
What currency and what about taxes?
Prices are USD. Local taxes, duties, shipping, and connectivity billed separately. Enterprise Framework quotes can be issued in local currency on request.
Do I own the hardware?
Yes. TrailGuard is a one-time purchase. No lease, no rental, no lock-in. 12-month hardware warranty. If your subscription lapses, the camera keeps functioning as an offline SD-card device.
